Own-use and processing declaration

South African law permits the sale of meat only where an animal has been slaughtered at a registered abattoir and processed at a licensed facility. The slaughter and cutting we arrange are therefore offered strictly as services performed on animals you already own, for your own use, and this declaration is the means by which that distinction is kept clear.
The declaration you make
In adding slaughter or cutting to your order, you confirm that the animals concerned, and any meat that results from those services, are for your own personal, cultural or religious use, and are not intended for resale.
Why the declaration is required
The Meat Safety Act 40 of 2000 reserves the sale of meat to animals slaughtered at registered, graded abattoirs and processed at licensed facilities. The Cattle Exchange does not sell meat. By offering slaughter and cutting only as services on animals you have already bought, and by recording your declaration, we remain firmly within that law while still enabling you to have your own animal processed for your own use.
How such orders are handled
Once processing is added, your animal is directed to a registered abattoir for slaughter and, where cutting is chosen, to a licensed cutting facility. Every order that involves meat carries a traceability record, from the origin of the animal, through slaughter and cutting, to delivery, so that what you receive can always be traced with confidence to the animal from which it came.
